Independent Living Options (ILO)
Independent Living Options (ILO)
Your home. Your way. With the right support beside you.
Independent Living Options is about giving you genuine choice and control over where you live and how you’re supported. Rather than fitting you into an existing arrangement, ILO is built around you your lifestyle, your goals, and the kind of life you actually want to live.
If you’re ready to live more independently but want the right support in place to make it work, ILO could be exactly what you’re looking for.

What Is ILO?
ILO is an NDIS funding support that helps participants live independently in a home of their choosing, with personalised support designed around their individual needs and goals. It’s one of the most flexible housing and support options available under the NDIS, and it looks different for every person.
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is typically a shared living arrangement where support is provided in a house with other participants. ILO is more flexible it can apply to a range of living situations including living alone, with a partner or family member, with a housemate of your choice, or with a host family. The focus of ILO is on designing support around your life, not fitting you into someone else’s.
ILO can support a range of arrangements including living independently in your own home with visiting support, living with a chosen housemate and sharing support costs, living with a host family who provides informal support as part of the arrangement, or a combination of these. We work with you to explore what will work best for your situation.
ILO is suitable for NDIS participants who want to live as independently as possible and have the capacity to direct their own support to some degree. It works well for people who want more choice and flexibility in their living arrangement than a group home environment provides, and for those who have a clear vision for the kind of life they want to build.

Finding the Right Fit for You
One of the most important parts of ILO is taking the time to explore what will actually work for you. We don’t rush this process. We sit down with you, understand your goals, and help you think through the options so you can make an informed decision about your living arrangement.
We start by getting to know you — your current situation, your goals, your preferences, and what independence looks like for you. From there we help you explore different living options, think through what support you’d need in each scenario, and work with your support coordinator to assess what’s feasible within your NDIS plan.
Absolutely. We encourage it. ILO decisions can involve a lot of moving parts and having the right people around you makes the process much easier. We work closely with families, carers, and support coordinators throughout the exploration and planning stages.
This varies depending on your situation, the living arrangement you’re exploring, and the complexity of your support needs. Some arrangements can come together relatively quickly while others take longer to plan and fund. We’ll be honest with you about timelines and keep you informed every step of the way.

Support That Fits Around Your Life
Once your living arrangement is in place, we provide the ongoing support that makes it work day to day. Whether you need a few hours of assistance each week or more regular support, we build your services around your routine and your goals not the other way around.
Support within an ILO arrangement can include personal care, household tasks, meal preparation, community access, skill building, medication support, overnight support, and assistance with social and recreational activities. The mix of supports depends entirely on your individual needs and what’s funded in your plan.
Yes. One of the key benefits of ILO is its flexibility. As your independence grows or your circumstances change, your support can be adjusted accordingly. We review your arrangement regularly and work with you and your coordinator to make sure it continues to meet your needs.
We’ll work with you to understand what isn’t working and explore alternatives. ILO is meant to support your wellbeing and quality of life, so if something isn’t right we want to know about it early so we can help find a better solution.

Growing Your Independence Over Time
ILO isn’t just about having support in place it’s about building the skills and confidence to need less of it over time, if that’s what you want. We work with participants on the practical and social skills that make independent living feel achievable and sustainable.
We can work with you on a wide range of independence skills including managing a household, budgeting and money management, cooking and nutrition, using public transport, building social connections, managing appointments and health routines, and any other skills that are part of living independently in your community.
Skill building is typically funded under Capacity Building in your NDIS plan. If you have Improved Daily Living or Improved Living Arrangements funding, this can often be used toward building independence skills. Your support coordinator can help you understand what’s available in your plan.
That’s completely fine. Not everyone’s goal is to reduce their support over time, and we respect that. Our role is to support you to live the life you want, whatever that looks like. We follow your lead and never push an agenda that isn’t yours.

FAQ's
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I have MTA funding in my NDIS plan?
Look for “Improved Living Arrangements” or “ILO” under your Capacity Building supports. If you’re not sure, speak with your support coordinator or contact our team and we’ll help you work it out.
Q: Can I live with a friend or partner under an ILO arrangement?
Yes. ILO can support arrangements where you live with a housemate or partner of your choice. The support is designed around your individual needs within that shared living situation.
Do I have to own or rent my own property?
No. ILO can apply across a range of housing situations including renting privately, living with family, living with a host, or other arrangements. The key is that the living situation is your choice and the support is built around it.
