Supported Independent Living (SIL)

Services

A home of your own, with the right support in place.

Supported Independent Living is about more than having somewhere to live. It’s about having a real home a place where you feel safe, comfortable, and genuinely supported to live as independently as possible. We provide the day-to-day assistance you need to make that work, without taking over or making you feel like you’re living in a facility.

What Is SIL?

Supported Independent Living (SIL)

Supported Independent Living provides funding for the support you need to live in shared or individual accommodation. SIL is not the property itself it’s the support that makes living there possible. Our team provides the day-to-day assistance that helps participants manage their home, their routines, and their lives with as much independence as possible.

How does SIL work?

SIL funding covers the cost of support workers who assist participants with daily tasks in their home. This includes personal care, household tasks, meal preparation, medication management, and any other supports needed to live safely and comfortably. The level of support provided depends on your individual needs and what is funded in your NDIS plan.

Is SIL a shared living arrangement?

SIL can apply to both shared and individual living arrangements. Many SIL participants live in a house with other participants and share the cost of support, while others live alone with individual support in place. The arrangement that works best depends on your needs, preferences, and what your NDIS plan supports.

Does SIL include the accommodation itself?

No. SIL funding covers support, not the property. Accommodation costs are separate and may be covered through Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) funding or through standard rental arrangements. Our team can help you understand how housing and support funding work together and connect you with the right people to explore your options.

Daily Support in Your SIL Home

Support That Fits Around Your Day

In a SIL arrangement, our support workers are there to help with the day-to-day tasks that keep your home running and your life on track. We work around your routine, your preferences, and your goals — providing the right level of support at the right times without being intrusive or taking over.

What daily support is included in SIL?

SIL support can include personal care such as showering, dressing, and grooming, meal planning and preparation, household cleaning and organisation, laundry, medication management, assistance with appointments and community access, and overnight or sleepover support where needed. The specific supports provided are based on your individual needs and NDIS plan.

Can I have a say in my daily routine and how support is provided?

Absolutely. Your home is your home and your routine is your routine. We work around you, not the other way around. We take the time to understand your preferences, your schedule, and the way you like things done before we start, and we adjust our approach as your needs or preferences change.

How long does it take to set up an ILO arrangement?

We work hard to provide consistency in your support team because we understand how important it is to feel comfortable with the people sharing your home. While there will always be some variation due to shift patterns and leave, we aim to keep your core support team as consistent as possible and always introduce new workers properly before they begin.

Finding the Right Living Arrangement

Finding a Home That Works for You

Finding the right SIL arrangement takes time and careful consideration. It’s not just about finding available housing it’s about finding the right environment, the right housemates if applicable, and the right support setup for your individual situation. We work with you, your family, and your support coordinator to explore your options and find the best possible fit.

How do I find a SIL property?

SIL properties are sourced through a range of channels including registered housing providers, specialist disability accommodation providers, and private rentals. We work closely with housing specialists and support coordinators who can assist with finding suitable properties in your area. Our role is to provide the support within the home once a suitable property is identified.

What should I look for in a SIL arrangement?

The right SIL arrangement depends on your personal preferences, support needs, and lifestyle. Key things to consider include the location and proximity to family, friends, and community, whether you prefer to live alone or with others, the level of support available, and the physical accessibility of the property. We’ll work with you to think through all of these factors carefully.

Can I choose who I live with in a shared SIL arrangement?

We do our best to facilitate compatible shared living arrangements. While we can’t always guarantee specific housemate combinations, we take compatibility seriously and consider factors such as lifestyle, support needs, and personality when placing participants in shared properties. Your comfort and safety in your home is always the priority.

Building Independence Within SIL

Living More Independently Over Time

SIL isn’t just about having support in place for many participants it’s also about gradually building the skills and confidence to need less of it over time. We work with participants who have that goal to develop their independence in a way that’s realistic, sustainable, and genuinely empowering.

Can SIL support include skill building?

Yes. Where participants have the goal of building greater independence, we incorporate skill building into the daily support we provide. This might include cooking, cleaning, managing finances, using public transport, or any other skills that contribute to a more independent lifestyle. Progress is tracked and reported as part of your broader NDIS goals.

What if I need more support at some times than others?

Support needs naturally fluctuate and we build flexibility into every SIL arrangement to account for that. If you’re unwell, going through a difficult period, or your circumstances change temporarily, your support can be adjusted accordingly. We review your arrangement regularly to make sure it continues to meet your needs.

What happens if my support needs change significantly over time?

If your support needs change significantly, we’ll work with you and your support coordinator to review your SIL arrangement and make sure it still fits. This might mean adjusting the level of support, exploring a different living arrangement, or looking at other NDIS housing options. We’ll always be honest with you about what’s working and what might need to change.

Frequently Asked Questions

SIL funding appears under Assistance with Daily Life in your Core Supports. It’s one of the higher-cost support categories and typically requires a detailed assessment of your support needs before it’s approved. Your support coordinator can help you understand whether SIL is the right fit and how to apply for funding if it’s not already in your plan.

SIL is specifically about funding support workers in a shared or individual home setting. ILO is a broader and more flexible option that covers a range of living arrangements including living with a chosen housemate, a host family, or independently with visiting support. SIL tends to suit participants who need more intensive or consistent support, while ILO works well for those who want more flexibility and choice in their arrangement.

Yes. A Short-Term Respite stay at one of our properties can be a great way to experience supported accommodation before moving into a longer-term SIL arrangement. It gives you and your family a chance to see how things work and build confidence before making a bigger commitment.

We take feedback seriously and want to know about any concerns as early as possible. If something isn’t working whether it’s the living arrangement, the support workers, or anything else talk to our team and we’ll work with you to address it. You also have the right to change providers if you feel a different arrangement would better meet your needs.

Yes. Families play an important role in many SIL arrangements and we welcome their involvement. We work closely with families during the setup process and maintain open communication throughout. Visits are always welcome and we’ll keep you informed about how your loved one is going.
